Tawakkol Karman official London visit 2011

At the Queen Elizabeth Conference Centre, International Development Minister Alan Duncan MP meets Tawakul Karman and members of the Yemeni community and diaspora, together with academics and specialists in Yemen affairs

Tawakkol Karman was awarded the Nobel Peace prize in 2011 – jointly with two other peace activists from Liberia.  From the moment her prize win was announced, Tawakkol became an instant celebrity.  Youngest woman and First Arab to receive the prize – quite an achievement! And in the year of the Arab Spring!!!Obviously, Tawakkol became very in-demand with the press and media and her life was temporarily taken over by this new and exciting whirlwind of celebrity.  Between the announcement of the prize and the actual ceremony to receive it, she travelled for two months on official visits under considerable media spotlight.The actual award was given in a traditional ceremony in Stockholm on 10th December 2011.

Between the announcement of the prize and the actual ceremony to receive it, she travelled for two months on official visits under considerable media spotlight.The actual award was given in a traditional ceremony in Stockholm on 10th December 2011. A few days later she came and spent three very busy days in London followed by a visit to Sheffield.

Tawakkol’s message was clear and consistent

  • Ali Abdullah Saleh should be held to account for his actions whilst president of Yemen;
  • his accounts and those of his “inner circle” should be frozen to enable stolen funds to be returned to Yemen;
  • there should be no amnesty for corruption

IYG and CAABU jointly organised and ran Ms Karman’s public and media appearances during her visit to London in December 2011, some of which are shown above.

Tawakkol gave a presentation and answered questions to a full-to-capacity auditorium at Chatham House who organised the event “A democratic Future for Yemen”.

We secured several media appearances for Ms Karman and below is a selection of some of the articles that were written and published after interviews with her during her visit to London.
