The Women’s Protection Program (WPP) was formed in response to the desperate need to accelerate the work that is being carried out to protect the rights of women and children in Yemen.
In Yemen, there are few safeguards to protect women facing difficulties that make them unable to control their own destinies. Standing up to domestic violence, protecting their own children from abuse, and even just facing up to the prospect of divorce can all lead a woman to fall into a state of destitution. For children, the situation is even worse as there is little institutionalised protection in Yemen against child abuse, children being forced into marriage, child labour and modern-day slavery.
Two other sectors within society in Yemen have been identified by the WPP for specific attention due to their intense vulnerability: women with special educational and physical needs and women from the marginalised group known throughout Yemen as the Akhdam or Muhamasheen.
